Age is just a number! How to embrace midlife as a career asset

Let's face it – sometimes people make assumptions based on our age.

But why let a number dictate your potential or define your worth? The truth is, ageism can start from within, and it's time to flip the script.

In midlife, you possess a wealth of experience and insights that are incredibly valuable. Rather than seeing age as a hurdle, embrace midlife as an asset.

Here’s how to highlight the value of your experience and showcase that age is just a number, not a limitation:

1. Check Your Age Attitude: Your perception of age can impact how others perceive you. Reflect on what you believe a woman in her 40s, 50s, or 60s is capable of! Challenge any internalized ageist beliefs you might hold. Think of inspiring women you know who are doing extraordinary things in the second half of life—whether they've reinvented their careers, started new ventures, or achieved significant milestones.

If you need more examples, our “How She Did It” series highlights remarkable stories of women who have made impactful career transformations. We promise once you shift your mindset, you’ll start radiating confidence!

2. Brag a Little (or a Lot): When it comes to showcasing your achievements, don’t hold back. Your recent wins are a testament to your ongoing effectiveness and capability. Did you drive a major project that boosted sales by 30%? Did you implement a cost-saving strategy that saved your company a substantial amount? Make sure to highlight these accomplishments in conversations and on your resume (remember-  volunteer roles- count too!)

Your experience isn’t just a list of past duties; it’s a collection of significant successes that demonstrate your value. Shout these achievements from the rooftops and remind others of the powerful impact you can make!

3. Make Friends with Colleagues of All Ages: Today’s workplace is more diverse than ever, with up to six generations working side by side! Embrace this diversity by making connections across generational divides. Participate in social and team-building activities like after-work events.

These interactions not only help you integrate better into the company culture but also showcase your ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across the generations. And head to networking events if you’re in transition mode – interacting with colleagues of all ages will get you set up for today's workforce!

Remember, your age is an asset, not a liability. You need to believe that first, before anyone else can. Embrace the skills, stories, and sass you’ve developed over the years and let them shine!
