Keeping all the balls in the air: 3 tips for mastering the midlife juggle

Updated: Sep 11

a woman with. a lot of balls in the air

One question we get from women all the time at EvolveMe is very real for us, too, as we manage caregiving (kids AND parents), empty nesting (plus kids moving back home again!), work responsibilities, and self-care.

How do I juggle my work, family, and personal life without dropping any balls?

Let's face it: midlife often feels like we're at the center stage of a never-ending juggling act. Work deadlines, family responsibilities, personal goals, and the ever-elusive "me time" are all vying for our attention.

Dropping even one ball can feel like an impending disaster.

But here's the thing: juggling isn't about keeping everything in the air all the time.

It's about knowing which balls are made of glass (and can't be dropped) and which are rubber (and will bounce back if they fall). It's about rhythm, timing, and sometimes, letting a ball or two rest while you focus on the others.

In midlife, we could be at the peak of our careers, contemplating a change or trying to make a comeback, while simultaneously navigating the complexities of family life – often caring for growing children and aging parents at the same time. Add to that our own personal aspirations and the need for self-care, and it's no wonder we sometimes feel overwhelmed!

But don't worry! We've got strategies to help keep you going. These aren't just quick fixes; they're transformative approaches to help you create a more balanced, fulfilling life.

Let's dive in:

  1. Boundaries are your secret weapon in the work-life juggling act. Start by clearly defining your work hours and sticking to them. Create a dedicated workspace at home if you work remotely to separate work from personal life. Create start and end times for your day to enhance focus. Most importantly, learn to say "no" – and say it often. Remember, every "yes" to one thing is a "no" to something else. Make your "yeses" count. Setting boundaries isn't selfish – it's essential for your wellbeing and, ultimately, your productivity.

  2. Prioritize self-care as a non-negotiable. Self-care isn't a luxury; it keeps you healthy and happy! Identify what truly recharges you – whether it's reading, exercise, meditation, or a hobby – and schedule it into your calendar like any other important appointment. Start a self-care routine, even if it's just 15 minutes a day. And don't forget the basics: regular exercise, nutritious meals, and adequate sleep are core to your ability to handle stress and maintain energy levels. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup!

  3. Champion flexibility in your work life. Let’s get real. The traditional 9-to-5 workday wasn't designed with midlife women in mind. If possible, propose a flexible work arrangement to your employer. This could mean adjusted hours, working from home or in a hybrid situation, or a compressed workweek. Take advantage of flexibility by structuring your day around your natural energy peaks. This also applies if you work for yourself. Remember, flexibility isn't just about where and when you work – it's also about how you work.

Mastering the work-life juggling act in midlife is no small feat, but with these tips, you can create a rhythm that works for you.

Remember, the goal isn't perfection – it's finding a balance that allows you to thrive in all areas of your life. You've got this, and your best act is yet to come!
